Academic Development
The College of Liberal Arts at National Chengchi University was established in 1958, initially comprising the Departments of Chinese, Education, Western Languages, and Eastern Languages. In response to social development and the growing demand for higher education, the university expanded its academic offerings beginning in the 1960s. The Departments of History and Philosophy, along with associated research institutes, were subsequently established, gradually shaping the College’s development around teaching, research, and talent cultivation in the humanities.
Following years of academic development and organizational restructuring, the College currently consists of three departments—the Department of Chinese, the Department of History, and the Department of Philosophy—four independent institutes: the Graduate Institute of Library, Information, and Archival Studies, the Graduate Institute of Religious Studies, the Graduate Institute of Taiwan History, and the Graduate Institute of Taiwanese Literature; the Master’s and Doctoral Degree Programs in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language; and two additional master’s degree programs in Continuing Education. In 2026, the International Ph.D. Program in East Asia and the Making of the Modern World was established, further expanding cross-national, inter-university, and interdisciplinary research in the humanities and doctoral education.
To strengthen research capacity and promote interdisciplinary academic collaboration, the College houses ten interdisciplinary research centers:

Mission
The mission of the College of Liberal Arts is to enhance teaching and research in the humanities, cultivate professional and interdisciplinary talent, and promote the humanistic spirit. In addition to specialized teaching and research in literature, history, philosophy, library and information studies, and related fields, the College also provides language education and general education courses in the humanities. It actively responds to emerging issues arising from social change, technological development, and interdisciplinary research, while encouraging students to engage in self-directed and interdisciplinary learning in order to develop their problem-solving abilities.
In the area of international exchange, the College and its affiliated departments and institutes have established academic cooperation agreements with over 50 renowned international universities. Through faculty and student exchanges, academic visits, collaborative research, and course cooperation, the College continues to deepen international engagement. It also provides curricula in Chinese language and culture for international students, thereby further expanding the College’s international academic network.
